rentoid.com aims to…
help people have access to what they need, when they need it. To demonstrate that we don’t need to own resources, just have access to them.

The idea came from …
applying the law of the opposite. There is a business maxim that says every business has an equal and opposite business (from The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout). The opposite of buying and selling on the web is holding and keeping, and sharing. So I thought about creating a peer-to-peer rental market.

The easiest way to explain rentoid.com is…
a market place where people can rent things to and from each other using the internet.

The biggest misperception about rentoid.com is…
that people rent things they can’t afford. Not true - people tend to rent things they only need temporarily. In fact, we find that our most fervent members are high-income earners who are smart with resource allocation - people who embrace change and technology.

The best moment so far…
was when I was out for dinner and someone was talking about rentoid.com without knowing it was something I started. That was more exciting than getting TV and media coverage because I was impacting people’s lives in a positive way. I felt so proud.

The biggest challenge to overcome…
is having a depth of rental items. We tend to have nearly everything, but geography matters a lot. People want proximity to the item. We tend to grow in geographic clusters, which takes time.

Another example of Collaborative Consumption I admire is…
Flexicar, which is a car-sharing business. I love how they are using technology and re-educating the world on more efficient, yet personal transport methods. It’s great because most cars are stationary for their life - simply ‘parked’, which is resource madness!

In the future for rentoid.com…
I hope that people think about us before buying something. That people say stuff like… “Don’t buy it, just get it on rentoid…” Almost like becoming the verb “to rentoid” it. This is a massive goal. But it’s important enough to never stop aiming for because what the world needs now is a more efficient resource allocation. Rentoid.com is part of the solution, which is why I’m here.
